2012 CNM Series Reports
WELCOME BANQUET
Sunday August 19th
The welcome banquet was held at the Masonic Hall in Brighton. Co-chairs Susie Bell and Shirley Greener presided over the activities. The judges and committee members were introduced, and Marie Sawford spoke on behalf of the 2012 CNM Charity, OVC Pet Trust. Handlers and guests enjoyed a meal of roast beef and chicken. Before the handler bags and bibs were handed out, the winner of the early bird prize in the elimination draw was announced: George Amenhobar of Connecticut. His friend Jim Pickunka picked up his prize on his behalf. Then 25 tickets were pulled for the elimination draw. The handler bags were handed out and the three scratches were announced: dogs 8, 27, and 30. The head marshall, Tim Marshall, then drew the number for the starting dog which was #38 Longgun Annie Oakley handled by Deb Rusaw. Dessert was served and then the next 25 tickets were pulled for the elimination draw. The holder of ticket 50, and the winner of the first $100 prize was Barb Vessey.
MONDAY AUGUST 20
SERIES ONE
Land Triple with Blind
The day began with single marks thrown for the OVC Pet Trust Ambassador dog, Banker, and Honorary Test Dog, Kramer, to great applause from the gallery. Then the judges introduced the scenario, and the male test dog Willy, handled by Phil Anderson demonstrated the test. He did a fine job of it. Then Ryan McGinn came to the line with the female test dog Stella who also did the test well.
The first series consisted of a land triple with a blind, simulating a field hunt for geese and ducks in rolling hills with scrubby cover. Several dozen goose and duck shells were placed throughout the field. The marks were thrown left, centre and then right. The left bird was thrown right to left at 60 yards up an incline and was shot from the line with a double pop from the shotgun by line gunner Karl Oostrom. The centre bird was 93 yards out, thrown from right to left from behind a line of low trees with a goose call from the field and a double shot from the gun station. The final bird came out from behind a small hill from left to right at 40 yards with a double shot from a the second gunner on line, Phil Anderson. The blind was at 79 yards, between marks one and two.
Dogs coming to line were announced by Karen Carson in the morning, and by Laureen Kinney in the afternoon. Dog 38 started the day off with a clean job. Work on this series was generally very good, and took from 5-51/2 minutes per dog. The end of the blind proved to be tricky for a number of dogs with swirling winds out in the field making it difficult for some to pinpoint the bird in the cover in which it was planted. The young gunners did excellent work all day with only two no-birds, which occurred for dogs 39, and 37. Only three dogs had handles on marks, dogs 2, 13, and 15.
One dog was dropped on this series, dog #13. The test will continue tomorrow with a water series. Dog 13 will be test dog and the first running dog will be dog #4.
The group got together in the evening for a lasagne dinner at headquarters. The next 50 tickets in the elimination draw were pulled and the winner for today was Kevin Cheff. A card draw was also conducted for a collar donated by Tritronics. When the last card was pulled the winner was Joe Bourgeois.

DELAYED WATER TRIPLE WITH BLIND
The test today consisted of a delayed water triple. The long mark up the centre was shot first, landing in a small bay by an island and mud flat. Then the left hand mark at 50 yards was shot and the dog was released to retrieve. Upon retruning with the go-bird, another bird was shot off to the right from the dyke, landing in the pond behind, with three shots coming from the gun station. After retrieving that bird and the long memory bird, the dogs were asked to retrive a blind placed at the far end of the pond, which required the dogs to take a line between the long bird and the dyke.
Numerous duck decoys were placed in the bay before the running line, and there was an operating roboduck positioned on the dyke. The judges constructed a shore blind at the line, behind which the handler had to stand with the dog peeking out through the opening below. Once the marks were down the handler was free to step out to send the dog on its retrieves and prepare for the delayed bird and blind.
The test dogs for today were Scaupgetters It's a Breeze, "Breeze", handled by Pearl McGinn, and AFTCH TML's Light the Lamp, "Almo", handled by Bill Kennedy of Purina. The first dog to run the test today was dog #4 High Mileage Cool and Groovy, handled by Marty Kress.
Through the day a number of dogs had difficulty with the long memory bird and had to be handled to the mark. At the completion of the test, seven more dogs have been dropped (2,12,15,17,25,28,34) leaving 30 dogs to run the upland test tomorrow. The caravan will leave HQ at 8:00am to head to the upland site at Roseneath Kennels.
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 22
UPLAND TEST
(DB=planted dead bird P=Live Pheasant)
The upland series was held today at Pearl McGinn's preporty near Roseneath ON. Thirty dogs were back after yesterday's water series, with dog #11, Dakota Creek's Royal Navigator to start. More volunteers came out today to keep the event moving along, including gunners Jerry and Al, and line marshall Andy Tucker.
Live hen pheasants were used for this test. Two dead birds were planted in the field as well as scattered feathers to create some scent pockets for the dogs to work from. Two live birds were also placed in two different locations in the field. The judges instructed the handlers that the dogs needed to flush one of the live birds, and demonstrate steady to flush and shot before being released by the judges to retrieve the bird. The dog would only quarter on to the second bird in the event that the first bird escaped, or was grabbed by the dog before it could fly. The judges were also very clear in their instruction that in the event that the bird flew in an unsafe direction, the gunners would fire into the air, allowing the dog to demonstrate steadiness, while protecting the safety of the gallery, participants and workers.
The birds flew very well, and in most cases the gunners got a shot at them. A few birds were lucky however, and flew free! Dog 31 had a runner who escaped into the tall cover and had to flush the second bird. There were also two dogs in the test who had controlled breaks on the shot. But work was good enough that all dogs have been called back to series 4 tomorrow. The starting dog will be dog #22, Boogie Dancer MH with Daniel Desgagne.

SERIES FOUR: WALK-UP LAND TRIPLE WITH DOUBLE BLIND AND WALK-UP HONOUR
The test today commenced under sunny skies yet again, with warm temperatures forecasted for the day. In spite of the good time had by all at the worker party hosted by Purina last night, the hand.ers were present and ready to run! The judges explained the scenario which was a walk-up land triple, with a double blind and a walk-up honour.
As the dogs approach the line, the working dog is placed to the left of judge Gilles Gelinas who walks with the dogs as a hunting partner. The honouring dog is to his right. In the handlers meeting the judges were very clear that the dogs were to keep pace with Gilles on the walk-up. They also specified that in the case of a severe creep by the honouring dog that constituted interference with the working dog, a no-bird would be called, and the scenario would begin again with the honour dog on lead. (And we all know what that means!)
Following the scenario test dogs were run: GMH B-line's Supernova CDX WCX TDX UTD CGN RA QFTR handled by Pat van Bregt, and Blackduc's Papita of Briarwood handled by Thomas Hoagland. Then Pat and Star acted as the honour dog for the first running dog, #22, Boogie Dancer MH handled by Daniel Desgagne.
The line was at the top of a substantial hill, and the marks were thrown starting with the left bird, which came out of the treeline left to right and landed on the edge of the trees, and was shot by line gunner Karl Oostrom. The second mark was thrown from a well camoflaged blind on the edge of the corn field left to right into tallish cover, preceeded by a goose call, and with a double shot. The third mark came from the right station near a small copse of trees and landed at the centre bush of a trio of shrubs just across a two-track at the base of the hill, and was again shot by Karl on line. Numerous goose shells were placed out near the middle mark and just off the line to the left blind.
After the marks were picked up, the dogs ran the left-hand blind first. The blind required the dogs to descend the hill and then pass a pine trees and push through some scrubby cover at an angle up a rise. This blind proved to be challenging for a number of dogs, as those which drifted too far to the left easily got out of sight from the send line forcing their handlers to run to where they could be seen. Once the dogs were returning with this bird, Karl shot another round from the line to set up the second blind which was straight down the hill, taking a keyhole between the shrubs only a yard past where the go-bird had landed. This blind also gave a number of dogs and handlers a challenge. Despite the challenging nature of the blinds, there were a couple of dogs who managed to line one or the other.
Our bye-dogs for the day were for the lunch break, "Tam" Rowantide's Celtic Cap handled by today's marshall, Liz MacPherson; and for the final dog of the day, "Kol" Riveroak Kolsvartur WCX MH QFTR handled by Fred Benjaminson.
After the judges conferenced, four more dogs were dropped: #14, 26, 40, and 41. Tomorrow dog #32 will start on the final test, which looks to be a big, challenging water test.
FRIDAY AUGUST 24, 2012
FINAL SERIES:
WATER BLIND, WATER TRIPLE, AND HONOUR
The Water Blind
The Marks and Honour
The twenty-six dogs called back to play today were greeted with a challenging final test consisting of a shoreline water blind, followed by a water triple and an honour. The test simulated a duck hunt on a pond where a number of other hunting parties are also present, but lacking dogs to retrieve their birds. Fast dogs with clean work could do the test in a little over 9 minutes, and for dogs who were slower swimmers or had hunts and handles the test could take upwards of 18 minutes.
The test began with the blind of 88 yards, which ran down the shoreline of the east side of the pond, past several points, including the one from which the marks were run. The retrieve was initiated by a bubba gunner seated in the reeds who shouted out: "I got one! Can your dog pick it up for me?" as the dog approached the line. After the dog reached the bird, the handler was asked to walk along the shoreline to meet the dog on the point from which the marks were run, and after the dog arrived the honour dog came and joined the party sitting to the right and slightly back of the working dog, with the handler behind a small shore blind.
The first mark thrown was the long bird up the middle at 120 yards which came from a well brushed blind up on shore and was thrown left to right with a huge arc, land just to the left of a patch of cover. This mark was shot by a bubba gunner sitting in a canoe on the shoals who shot two rounds off. Then the right hand bird was shot from a holding blind on the dyke, going right to left and landing in a clup of cover. This mark was 76 yards. The final bird came from a station left and behind the line at 23 yards out, at which point the working dog was released to retrieve, and once underway the honour dog was also released.
The blind proved to be challenging for a couple of dogs who found some trouble with the tules along the back side of the second point. All dogs completed the blind however, and all dogs picked up all three marks. A couple of dogs did stellar work on the marks, including the tough punch bird up the centre which was the mark that proved most challenging for many dogs, and in some cases generating large hunts and handles. The bird on the dyke to the right also produced a number of handles when dogs landed upwind of it and started to hunt into the pond behind.
This series also saw the only break by a working dog in the entire test, when dog #10 broke on the honour. Such a heartbreak as his work had been excellent all week. The last dog finished running shortly after 3:30 at which point the judges retired to deliberate.
